The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
Description from Goodreads:
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

I feel quite conflicted about The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. I really wanted to like this book and it could have easily been 3.5+ stars had another person read this instead. On one hand, the premise was intriguing however its execution left a lot to be desired. Furthermore the things that bothered me are very subjective and will most likely not affect other readers at all. It’s not exactly a bad story and I still think that this book is worth checking especially if you are a fan of Holly Black’s previous works. I was originally in the mood for vampires and went in with high expectations. Needless to say, I was ultimately left disappointed.

The rest of this review can be read over at Book Brobe.

An electronic advance reading copy was provided by the publisher. This did not influence my opinion in any way.

It sucks that this book wasn't for you. A lot of people said the same thing so it's not like you're the only one.

Thanks for dropping by! I always feel like the odd one out when writing a negative review :( It's definitely not fun at all.

That sucks. I've seen this book around many blogs but haven't really considered it. Haven't heard many people rave about it too much actually. I think you'll like The Sweetest Dark better, I know I loved that book!

Ah, I already finished The Sweetest Dark and am in the middle of writing up its review. Unfortunately I had mixed feelings about it as well :( I'm glad that you enjoyed it though! I'm still going to read the sequel so perhaps I'll like it more.

Such a shame. This book has been getting so many negative reviews and I was so excited about it. I might try it just to see it for myself, but at least I know that I'm not in for a good read. Thanks for the honesty :)

Yeah, I was also looking forward to this book as well. The ARC reviews so far have been more positive than negative so perhaps it's just me :)
Thanks for commenting!

Estelle said...[Reply]

Yeah, I was drawn to the synopsis in the first place as well however I guess the book was a let down for me :(
Thanks for dropping by!

I hate when they lure you in with an awesome cover and/or a great description, then it's a big let down!

Mm, too bad about this one, although it's nothing I haven't heard before. It seems like a lot of people have the same issues with this one as you did. I also have a copy from NetGalley so I guess I will see soon enough whether or not I like it.

Hmmm, according to Goodreads it seems that I'm in the minority here however that may change once the book is released. Hope you enjoy your Netgalley copy, thanks for commenting!

hey! great to meet another aussie blogger, I graduated from high school 2 years ago so a similar age as well :D I haven't read this one yet so I didn't read your review on book probe but it's really cool how you post on both sites! I loved Curse Workers by Holly Black, disappointed that this one didn't meet your expectations

Estelle said...[Reply]

Thanks for dropping by :) Yay for another aussie book blogger haha. I've heard great stuff about her other books as such White Cat as well, so perhaps it's just this one that's not for me. I look forward to your thoughts of this book if you do end up reading it!

Thanks! I'm too lazy to do a book haul post every week so I just end up taking photos of each batch of books as they come along haha. Going through the #bookhaul or #bookstagram hashtags on Instagram is quite addictive...

If you are looking for the humanized, now traditional vampire but with a
few new twists to the story, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is definitely
a book you want to check out. Especially if you are a lover of vampire
fiction. Holly Black has yet to disappoint me.
